Artist Statement
Binary Code is the language that changed our world forever. Not since man’s discovery of fire has there been a more impactful change. Starting with the personal computer, the advent of the Internet and more recently artificial intelligence and machine learning.
Art has documented human history since the beginning of man. Long before written language, man documented daily life and important historical events through art. Before the advent of photography, the artist was a visual documentarian.
Art has broken new ground with the recent sale of an NFT work for 69.3 million dollars. A virtual file minted by an artist nicknamed Beeple has altered the concept of art and re-defined provenance.
Visual art needs to remain relevant to changing times and as a conceptual artist and formally trained scientist, I am fascinated by the connection between art and science. I am compelled to create visual imagery that memorializes the impact of technology on society.
I use the imagery of technology in collage, monoprint and metallic leaf with successive layering that creates the illusion of glowing computer screens. In my series “Bits and Bytes” and “In Code We Trust”, I have added the ability to reposition and rotate the art to allow ‘editing’ by the viewer thereby participating in the outcome.
I believe I have found the intersection and I hope you think so as well.
